Dog Sledding in Ammassalik, East Greenland

The most traditional and resourceful mode of transportation in the Arctic is the dog sled. It has been used by hunters and ancient travelers, and continues to be East Greenland's the number one form of transport during the winter. It's a fact that East Greenland is nature's last unspoilt regions and winter in the best season to explore the vast snow-covered white wilderness. The flat frozen fjords offer the perfect opportunity for long distance travel on these ice plains. This is possible with the world's most powerful canines, a group of harnessed dogs.

Dogsled is possible only in the area north of the Arctic Circle and in Eastern Greenland, which is locally known as "The dogsled districts". During the winter and spring, Sisimiut and Kangerlussuaq are the two most southerly towns on the west coast from where it is possible to drive dogsleds. February, March and April are the best months. It is also possible to drive dogsleds near the town of Qeqertarsuaq on Disko Island, during the summer months on Lyngmarksbraen at a height of 7-800 meters.
